Miley Cyrus, known for being a Disney channel star, became a wild and unpredictable artist in her adulthood. However, with her new song, “Malibu”, people are reminded of the innocence that she once carried.

Miley’s Hannah Montana days came to an abrupt halt with the release of her albums Bangerz (2013) as well as Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015). Her style focused on her partying lifestyle. While she still maintained her songwriting skills with more meaningful songs about relationships and love, most people (especially parents) could only focus on her wild and inappropriate behavior.

With the new release of “Malibu”, she is apparently turning a new leaf. At the still very young age of twenty four, she has reinvented her music style multiple times already, but this new style is somehow both mature as well as nostalgic. Cyrus’ style and arrangement in this song reminds many fans of her older music.

The arrangement is simple, but with an loud and energetic beat continuing throughout the song. The lyrics are mature, as Cyrus is admitting to needing someone else for her to grow, and that everything looks brighter and better with that person. Lyrics such as “I always thought I would sink, so I never swam I never went boatin', don't get how they are floatin'. And sometimes I get so scared of what I can't understand” show the vulnerability in Cyrus, something she hasn’t allowed many people to see recently.

Cyrus is always changing her style and persona, and in a way it’s admirable. She will never bore the audience, and in between the songs about parties and being young, there are songs such as “Malibu” that show her vulnerability and make her more relatable to her fans. Cyrus is an artist to continue following and she will keep the audience’s attention with her unpredictability and songwriting talent.
